Boyan Slat

English explanation

The mural painting revolves around young changemakers. It is a call to action and source of inspiration for young people to contribute to a better world. It shows us that taking action now is important, both on a global and smaller, local scale. If we all work together, the world will change.
The mural painting is a creative extension of the UN75 global conversation and a way to facilitate discussions about the future and what the new generation wants it to look like. The aim of the mural is to reflect on SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). The project celebrates the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is created through the input of youth, guided by UN Youth Impact. Students and school children participated in dialogues over the last year and provided input through a survey of UN Youth Impact.

Explanation of the design

The design revolves around young changemakers. Youthful heroes who want change, who are taking action. On top, you see a portrait of Satta Sheriff and at the bottom a portrait of Boyan Slat: both young, important individuals working on different SDG’s. They do not take no for an answer.
The bottom shows big roots, important components of nature. They are attached to Satta, symbolizing the woman as the rooted foundation for every family and the source of all human life. Satta is partially displayed in colour to show her strength and commitment. She has a warrior kind of look. Boyan is partially blue, the sea is on his mind. A wind of change blows the plastic soup in an upward direction. It’s all about taking action.
At the top right one can see wings that spread out to fly, to explore and feel freedom. It could even be a dove flying high in the sky, a metaphor for peace. On the left a ladybird flies off, a known symbol for anti-violence and associated with protection, healing, love and innocence. On the right, a red plasticized form rises up. Almost like a goose beak that screams in pain to represent the way we human cruel treatment of animals and our deafness to their pain.
The bold red and blues combined with natural earth tones make it a limited and strong color pallet. The red gives the image power, passion. But in some spots, it might refer to bloodshed. The blue gives a confident feel, also associated with freedom and freshness.

Satta Sheriff

Satta Sheriff (she/her) is a Human Rights Activist and a staunch champion for justice who has been working to defend children and women's rights since age nine. In 2016, she founded Action for Justice and Human Rights (AJHR), a children and youth driven NGO to advocate and ensure access to justice and respect for Human Rights in Liberia. Today, AJHR is working to hold the Liberian government accountable to human rights, advocating against sexual violence, creating awareness and providing safe spaces, resources and psychosocial support for survivors of sexual abuse. Last year, Satta was awarded the Most Prominent Youth Advocate of the year Award, and in 2016 as the Most Influential Teen for being a strong voice against injustice and human rights violations in Liberia.

Boyan Slat

In 2011, aged 16, Boyan Slat (he/him) found more plastic than fish while diving. He made ocean plastic pollution the subject of a high school project, examining why it was considered impossible to clean up. He later came up with the idea of building a passive plastic catchment system, using circulating ocean currents to net plastic waste, which he presented at a TEDx talk in Delft in 2012. Slat discontinued his aerospace engineering studies at TU Delft to devote his time to developing his idea. He founded The Ocean Cleanup non-profit in 2013. The group's mission is to develop advanced technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. In 2019, the first mission returned 60 bags of garbage. In July 2021, the second mission gathered 9,000 kilograms of trash.

Artists: The design of the mural was created by artist duo Karski & Beyond based on the ideas of students and school children who participated in dialogues and a survey about their worries and visions of the future and the role of The Hague, international city of peace and justice.
